Cuba reaffirms cooperation with Pacific Island nations at PIF summit

Cuba has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening cooperation and solidarity with Pacific Island nations during the 55th Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting held in Palau. Representing the nation as a dialogue partner, Cuban Ambassador to Fiji Néstor Torres emphasized the historical ties initiated by Fidel Castro, particularly in the sectors of health and education.

Key areas of cooperation include the deployment of medical brigades to countries such as Kiribati, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, and Fiji. Additionally, Cuba has provided medical training to approximately 245 young people from the region, who have returned to their communities as qualified professionals. The discussions also highlighted shared concerns regarding climate change, rising sea levels, and the rejection of nuclear weapons and external interference.
