China delivers 5,000 photovoltaic systems to Cuba
China has delivered a second donation of 5,000 photovoltaic systems to Cuba to support the island's energy transition and alleviate a severe power crisis. The donation, managed by the China International Development Cooperation Agency, aims to provide electricity to rural homes and critical services across Cuba's 169 municipalities, including health centers, childcare facilities, and bank branches.
These new solar systems offer improved technical specifications compared to the first batch delivered in November 2025. Each unit features a power of 3.6 kWh and a storage capacity of 14.3 kWh, doubling the previous capacity to better adapt to the National Electric System (SEN).
The aid arrives as Cuba faces intense energy instability, having recorded at least seven total collapses of the national grid in 2026. Cuban officials, including Vice Prime Minister Oscar Pérez-Oliva Fraga, have attributed the ongoing blackouts to aging infrastructure and the impact of U.S. economic sanctions. The donation is part of the Belt and Road Initiative and is intended to help achieve energy sovereignty through renewable sources.
