Cuba records 51st femicide of 2026 following death of teenager

The Alas Tensas Gender Observatory (OGAT) has documented the 51st femicide in Cuba for 2026 following the death of 17-year-old high school student Camila González Arias. The incident occurred on June 21 in the La Palma neighborhood of Arroyo Naranjo, Havana.

According to OGAT, the victim was allegedly beaten to death at the home of her 29-year-old partner, Carlos René Alfonso Gorejuria, following a pool party. The suspect's mother reportedly attempted to intervene and was also assaulted before calling the police. Although the suspect was taken into custody, the current status of legal proceedings is unspecified.

This case marks the fifth death of a minor resulting from gender-based violence in Cuba this year. OGAT noted that the verification process was “lengthy and challenging” and highlighted concerns regarding the normalization of relationships between minors and adults in the country. The current 2026 total of 51 documented femicides has already surpassed the total recorded throughout 2025.
