Cuba reports record $8 billion in damages due to US blockade

An Italian delegation comprising various social organizations and political parties, including members of the Democratic Party and the Five Star Movement, has highlighted the impact of the United States blockade on the Cuban population. During their visit, representatives such as Laura Boldrini and Stefania Ascari visited schools and hospitals, noting severe shortages in electricity, water, and medicine.

As part of their initiative, the delegation delivered 500 kilograms of medical supplies and equipment to the Calixto García University General Hospital. Much of this was funded through the ‘Energía por la vida’ campaign. The visitors reported that medical staff are facing significant challenges due to energy restrictions and a lack of essential medicines.

Complementing these observations, a report on the effects of the blockade between March 2025 and February 2026 quantifies damages at 8.083 billion dollars, a record annual figure. The report details how financial restrictions have forced Cuba to seek alternative, more expensive suppliers and longer logistical routes. Additionally, 34 international banking entities reportedly suspended or rejected operations with Cuba due to sanctions fears, leading to increased costs for technology and essential equipment.
