Cuba rice production faces fertilizer shortages and water crisis

Rice production in Cuba is facing severe threats due to rising costs and critical water shortages. Farmers in municipalities like Yara report that the prices of fertilizers and pesticides have increased by up to 70 percent, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. This inflation has forced many producers to reduce their planted areas or revert to traditional farming methods, such as using oxen instead of tractors, due to the inability to afford modern inputs.

Compounding these economic challenges, the Zaza Dam, the country’s largest reservoir, is in a critical state. It is currently at only 21 percent of its capacity. This low water level poses a direct risk to the rice industry, as the reservoir is essential for the irrigation systems used in the region. Officials warn that if rainfall does not increase before the end of the wet season, the upcoming planting campaign may see significantly lower volumes due to the lack of stored water.
