Cuba selects ‘Malecón’ for Academy Award international feature race

Cuba has selected the film ‘Malecón’, directed by Carlos Larrazábal, as its official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards. This selection marks the island's return to the Oscar race after a two-year absence.

A co-production between Cuba, Spain, and the United States, the film is set in contemporary Havana. It follows the story of Elvis, a man who returns to the city after serving ten years in prison. As he reunites with childhood friends, he is drawn into Havana’s underground economy and must navigate the difficult choice between staying in his homeland or seeking an uncertain future abroad.

In addition to the Oscar submission, Movistar Plus has acquired the streaming rights for the film in Spain. The production features an all-Cuban cast, including César Domínguez, Camila Rodhe, and Omar Rolando, and was filmed on location in Havana using natural light.
