Cuba sentences seven to prison for electrical substation oil theft

Seven individuals have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from 12 to 15 years for stealing 1,248 liters of dielectric oil from an electrical substation in Moa, Holguín. The theft resulted in power outages for 6,184 homes.

The Ministry of the Interior reported that the theft occurred in two separate operations. The court also ordered the confiscation of a vehicle, money, and other assets linked to the crime.

This case is part of a broader crackdown on crimes against the national electro-energetic system. In recent judicial proceedings across Pinar del Río, Sancti Spíritus, and Holguín, 11 people were sanctioned for various offenses, including the theft of components intended for solar panel assembly. Many of the accused held legitimate positions within the facilities, such as warehouse managers and plant operators, which they used to facilitate the theft and sale of resources.
