Cuba showcases AI initiatives at Dominican Republic summit

At a conference in the Dominican Republic, the University of Camagüey Ignacio Agramonte Loynaz presented two decades of work on artificial intelligence applied to education. The rector, Julio Madera Quintana, reported that 86 % of university students use AI tools, while nearly half do not assess their limits. The university highlighted its own projects, including an expert system for tutoring linear algebra, a predictive model for student dropout, and blended‑learning platforms with intelligent monitoring. These efforts helped the university become a founding member of Cuba’s Artificial Intelligence Consortium in 2025.

Cuban Deputy Minister of Communications Ailyn Febles Estrada also addressed the Ministerial Summit on AI Ethics in Latin America and the Caribbean. She reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to a sovereign, inclusive, and ethical AI framework, citing the 2024 National AI Strategy that emphasizes education, digital literacy, and the development of a national data authority. Estrada highlighted projects such as the Cuban sovereign language model CecilIA and programs to train public managers and workers, while urging regional South‑South cooperation to overcome external constraints.
