Cuba: Social figures critique economic crisis and mass emigration

Cuban broadcaster Laritza Camacho and satirical persona Ramona Morejón are highlighting the country's escalating social and economic crises through public appeals and humor.

Camacho has used social media to address the physical decay of Cuban streets and the mass exodus of citizens. She characterized the departure of Cubans as a perilous “exportation” of people that benefits the state through foreign currency while causing broken families and a “silent census of absences.” She has called for community-led action to address local issues and official rhetoric.

Simultaneously, the digital character Ramona Morejón uses satire to critique the soaring costs of basic goods and frequent power outages. Reports indicate significant inflation, such as the price of oil rising from 1,500 Cuban pesos in April to as much as 7,000 pesos by August. The satire also targets government responses, including suggestions to use artificial intelligence to manage the distribution of power outages.
