Cuba transport services face high costs and poor conditions

Public transportation in Cuba is facing significant challenges due to high costs and deteriorating infrastructure. In the Morón-Camagüey route, train services recently resumed following fuel shortages, but passengers have criticized the 1,500 CUP ticket price. This fare represents nearly half of the 3,210 CUP monthly minimum wage. Footage shared online shows poorly lit cars and severe neglect, with some users comparing the conditions to livestock transport.

In the municipality of Colombia, Las Tunas, state bus fares have been set at 800 pesos. While local officials claim this is a reduction from previous prices and that the service operates daily through a “co-production” fuel scheme, the cost remains high for residents. For those earning the minimum wage, a single bus trip accounts for approximately one-fourth of their monthly income. Officials noted that competition between state-run and leased buses has helped stabilize some rates, though they acknowledged prices are not yet at the levels desired by the population.
