Cuba-US relations face tension over migration and regime engagement

Tensions regarding Cuba-United States relations have surfaced through both diplomatic rhetoric and immigration enforcement actions. Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla recently criticized former President Donald Trump’s deportation policies, stating that many Cuban migrants in the U.S. face discriminatory treatment. His remarks followed the detention of prominent Cuban musicians, including pianist Andy García Palacios and Latin Grammy winner Degnis Bofill, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Simultaneously, former U.S. officials have cautioned the Trump administration against attempting to find a pragmatic Cuban counterpart within the current regime to facilitate a potential transition. Critics, including retired U.S. Army officer Emilio T. González, warn against engaging with officials linked to the Ministry of Interior (MININT). González described MININT as a corrupt institution tied to human rights abuses and characterized it as the “praetorian guard” of the communist regime, noting the difficulty in finding successors who are not part of the hardline sectors.
