Cuba warns US military action would be an ‘atrocious international crime’
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio has warned that any potential United States military action against Cuba would constitute an ‘atrocious international crime’. Speaking to C-SPAN, Fernandez de Cossio rejected claims by US President Donald Trump that Cuba is a failed state, asserting that the nation is a peaceful neighbor.
Fernandez de Cossio further characterized the ongoing US economic pressure—including the disruption of commercial shipments, withholding of fuel, and restrictions on healthcare and food supplies—as ‘equivalent to a genocide’. He noted that these measures have been in place for nine months and have severely impacted the nation's infrastructure, leading to fuel scarcity and power outages.
These remarks follow comments made by President Trump at the United Nations General Assembly, where he suggested that ‘freedom will be coming’ to the island. Trump also indicated to reporters that while he does not believe military force will be necessary, he views the current Cuban government as failing. The Cuban delegation exited the assembly hall following Trump's remarks.
