Cuban American business leaders plan for post-regime economic transition
Cuban American business leaders in Miami are developing economic strategies to prepare for a potential political transition on the island. During the fourth session of the Cuban American National Chamber of Commerce (CANCC), chaired by Juan Omar Sixto, committees were established to address critical sectors including energy infrastructure, food security, and the potential creation of a Cuban stock exchange.
These preparatory efforts occur against a backdrop of severe domestic instability in Cuba. The island has experienced multiple national power grid collapses in 2026, including a major blackout in August that left over nine million people without electricity. The energy crisis is driven by fuel shortages, equipment failures, and aging infrastructure, with many power plants operating with equipment over 30 years old. While the CANCC's plans do not assume a specific timeline for political change, the organization aims to be positioned to intervene economically once the current government is no longer in power.
