Cuban artists hold exhibitions in US exploring migration and identity

Cuban artists are presenting new exhibitions in the United States that explore themes of migration, identity, and belonging.

In Santa Fe, New Mexico, visual artist Mabel Poblet has opened a solo exhibition titled ‘Fragments of Memory’ at the Artes de Cuba gallery. Her work utilizes mixed media and origami techniques to transform photography into three-dimensional objects. Poblet’s pieces, such as the series ‘My Autumn’, reflect on the sensory experiences of travel and the human search for a sense of place.

In Washington, D.C., the NCO Gallery is hosting a collective exhibition titled ‘Mi camino: A Cuban Migration Story’. Curated by Natalie O’Connor, the show features works by nine artists, including Adonis Flores Betancourt, Gabriel Delgado Catena, and René Peña. The exhibition examines the emotional and psychological aspects of displacement, suggesting that the migratory process often begins internally before physical movement occurs. The collection highlights the tension between staying in one's homeland and the impulse to seek better conditions elsewhere.
