Cuban Deputy Minister Josefina Vidal Warns Cuba Ready to Defend Against U.S. Sanctions, Praises Canadian Aid

Cuban Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Josefina Vidal told Canadian media in Ottawa that Cuba is preparing to defend itself against what she described as U.S. “coercive measures on our economy.” She said, “We would never want a conflict with the United States but we are very conscious about the threats, and we are getting ready to defend our country.”

Vidal condemned the U.S. oil blockade and secondary sanctions, calling them “collective punishment” that has deepened Cuba’s economic crisis, fuel shortages and severe blackouts. She highlighted the impact on Canadian firms, noting that Blue Diamond Resorts withdrew from Cuba and Sherritt International cut operations after fuel constraints.

The diplomat praised Canada’s humanitarian assistance and called the country an important trade partner, urging broader international response. She warned that U.S. officials have hinted at possible military action and raids, adding that Cuba must remain ready. The remarks come amid ongoing shortages, suspended airline services and a deteriorating tourism sector.
