Cuban exile community commemorates 11 July protests in Madrid

Five years after the July 11, 2021 protests in Cuba, the Cuban diaspora in Madrid organized a three‑day program to remember the uprising and denounce ongoing repression. The events, held in Malasaña’s Casa del Cura community centre, featured a panel of activists, former political prisoners, human‑rights defenders and artists who discussed memory, resistance and the future of democracy in Cuba. Highlights included an augmented‑reality installation called “Caribbean Jacuzzi” by artist Yimit Ramírez, which recreated a symbolic police‑car crash from the original protests, and calls for the release of detained dissidents such as Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara. Speakers also shared personal testimonies of imprisonment and exile, underscoring that the wounds of the 2021 demonstrations remain open.

The gathering aimed to keep the spirit of “¡Libertad!” alive, urging international attention to the continued persecution of Cuban activists and their families.
