Cuban Film School EICTV Launches Fundraiser for Solar Power Backup

The International School of Cinema and Television (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, was founded in 1986 by Gabriel García Márquez, Fernando Birri and Julio García Espinosa. Over four decades it has trained thousands of filmmakers from more than 60 countries and now hosts about 100 students from over 30 nationalities.

Facing frequent power outages across Cuba, the school has opened an international crowdfunding campaign on the Goteo platform. The first phase seeks €15,000 to purchase portable solar‑powered generators for post‑production suites, guaranteeing up to eight continuous hours of work during blackouts. Subsequent phases will extend renewable energy systems to classrooms, offices and administrative areas, aiming eventually to run the entire campus on clean energy and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Donations start at €10 and include rewards such as books and workshop spots, supporting the institution’s role as a key hub for Latin‑American and global audiovisual education.
