Cuban immigrants face uncertainty under U.S. immigration crackdown

Under the second Trump administration, Cuban immigrants are facing increased scrutiny and uncertainty regarding their legal status in the United States. While Cubans have historically had preferential access to citizenship pathways via the Cuban Adjustment Act, recent policy shifts and court debates are challenging whether certain individuals meet the act’s qualifications.

Liexer De La Cruz, a certified electrician who had lived in the U.S. for five years after arriving via the U.S.-Mexico border in 2021, recently faced a pivotal immigration hearing in Miami. Faced with the choice between returning to Cuba or risking deportation, De La Cruz ultimately chose to return to his home country.

According to a ReliefWeb report, more than half a million Cubans who hold the I-220A form face uncertain legal status as courts continue to debate their eligibility for residency.
