Cuban July 2021 protests spark personal testimonies amid worsening shortages

In July 2021, unprecedented protests erupted across Cuba as citizens took to the streets demanding relief from chronic electricity outages, water scarcity, rising food prices and a strained healthcare system weakened by COVID‑19. The demonstrations, which spread from Havana to provinces such as Villa Clara, were driven by deepening economic contraction and growing political repression.

Andy García Lorenzo, who spent four years in political prison, said the protests changed his life. After his release he traveled to a rally outside the Villa Clara Provincial Court, describing a newfound sense of purpose. A Facebook post by a user named Danilo Roque had earlier urged neighbors in San Antonio de los Baños to “demand” change, reflecting the broader public frustration that fueled the unrest.
