ICE arrests Cuban musicians Latin Grammy winner immigration enforcement asylum seekers

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested two prominent Cuban musicians: Latin Grammy winner Degnis Bofill and pianist Andy García Palacios. Bofill, a percussionist, was detained on August 19 at Miami International Airport while returning from New York. He had entered the U.S. legally in 2023 and had a pending asylum application at the time of his arrest. He is currently held at the Krome detention center.

García Palacios was arrested on August 15 at Los Angeles International Airport and is being held in Adelanto, California. Renowned musician Chucho Valdés expressed support for García Palacios, describing him as a key representative of a new generation of Cuban musicians.

The arrests occur amid a reported increase in migration enforcement. In July 25, ICE and CBP recorded over 51,000 migrant arrests, the highest monthly figure during the current administration.

In a separate development, Cuban activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara, a former prisoner of conscience, received over 27,000 letters of solidarity from Amnesty International in Miami. The letters were sent globally during his five-year political imprisonment in Cuba before his exile to the United States in July.
