Cuban peso falls as US dollar surpasses 750 in informal market
The US dollar has surpassed the 750 Cuban peso (CUP) mark in Cuba’s informal exchange market, reaching an average of 753 CUP on September 29. This surge follows a rapid depreciation trend where the dollar rose approximately 11.4% over the previous 30 days.
The euro has also seen significant gains in the informal market, trading at an average of 855 CUP. This represents an increase of roughly 11.8% compared to its value one month ago, maintaining its position as the highest-valued major currency in the informal sector.
The currency volatility is significantly impacting local purchasing power. Cuba’s monthly minimum wage of 3,210 pesos is now worth approximately US$4.28 at the informal street rate. This reflects a decline in the real value of the August wage increase, as the peso continues to slide against foreign currencies. Additionally, reports indicate that inflation rose by 12.24% during the first half of 2026.
