Cuban residents increase citizen arrests amid rising theft
Residents across various Cuban provinces are increasingly engaging in citizen arrests and community-led detentions in response to rising theft and perceived inadequate law enforcement response.
In El Vedado, Havana, locals detained a man on Wednesday afternoon after he allegedly snatched a cell phone from a resident. The suspect was subsequently taken to the National Revolutionary Police station at Zapata and C. This follows a pattern of similar neighborhood captures in the area, including a previous incident involving the theft of an electric scooter.
In Villa Clara, a video surfaced showing a man allegedly caught in the act of stealing a bicycle and a box of canned drinks. Witnesses claimed the individual had already committed one theft and was attempting a second when apprehended. Similar incidents of residents restraining suspects have been reported in Cárdenas, Camagüey, Santiago de Cuba, and Cienfuegos, as communities take independent action due to sluggish police responses.
