Cuban worker killed in Guyana construction site accident

A fatal workplace accident occurred on Tuesday at a construction site in Houston, Guyana, resulting in the death of 36-year-old Cuban national Yordan Garcia Roland. Two other Cuban nationals, Troy Estriado, 33, and Yusvani Ramirez, 37, were seriously injured during the incident.

The accident reportedly occurred while the men were working on a building for Toucan’d Distributors Limited. A metal scaffold allegedly moved into contact with Guyana Power and Light (GPL) 13.8 kV primary distribution lines, possibly due to unsecured wheels. The contact sent a massive electrical shock through the structure.

The Ministry of Labour and Manpower Planning has launched an investigation to determine if occupational safety and health measures were followed. Occupational Safety and Health Officers have visited the worksite and the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation to monitor the situation. GPL has urged all contractors and workers to exercise extreme caution when operating near electrical infrastructure to prevent similar tragedies.
