Cuba’s 11J Protests Marked by Aid Distribution and International Forums

Ahead of the fifth anniversary of the July 11, 2021 protests, Santiago de Cuba’s authorities began distributing Chinese‑donated rice, beans, peas, children’s compotes and a pound of chicken per person. The aid arrives amid a severe food crisis, soaring market prices and daily power outages of up to 20 hours, highlighting widespread shortages of basic necessities.

In Madrid, three Cuban opposition groups in exile organised an international forum titled “Challenges for Cuba’s Future” to discuss the nation’s democratic transition. The event featured Cuban and international speakers, highlighted the continued imprisonment of over 1,260 political prisoners—including the unresolved detention of activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara—and called for a post‑authoritarian Cuba.
