Cuba's Antonio Guiteras Power Plant Restores Service to National Grid

The Antonio Guiteras central thermal power plant, Cuba’s largest and most efficient generating unit, was re‑connected to the national electricity system (SEN) on Friday at 12:07 local time. After the plant’s unexpected shutdown the previous day, technicians began a complex stabilization process, aiming to raise output from the current 130 MW to around 200 MW within a few hours.

The restoration comes as the eastern province of Guantánamo remains largely without power following a 110 kV transmission line fault, with only the municipalities of Baracoa and Maisí receiving electricity via a supply from Holguín. Across the country, eight thermal units remain offline, leaving a projected afternoon‑evening deficit of roughly 1,690 MW against a demand of 3,000 MW, or about 57 % of required capacity.

Officials noted that recent maintenance work on the Guiteras plant involved more detailed inspections than previous outages, aiming to reduce future failures, especially in the economizer section.
