Cuba’s Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plant Back Online in National Grid

The Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant in Matanzas, a key generator for Cuba’s western region, was re‑synchronised with the Sistema Electroenergético Nacional (SEN) at 14:28 local time after an outage caused by a boiler leak the previous day. Repairs focused on the economiser and the High‑Temperature Reheater, followed by a successful hydraulic test that allowed the plant to resume operation.

The outage occurred after the plant was taken offline at 17:20 due to the boiler incident, and followed a broader national power disruption triggered by the Felton 1 unit’s failure. Cuba’s electricity authority highlighted that acquiring spare parts remains difficult because of the United States’ economic, commercial and financial embargo, which limits the plant’s maintenance capacity despite its strategic importance for grid stability.
