Cuba's foreign minister says US has no moral authority to judge market reforms

Cuba announced a package of 176 measures aimed at liberalising its economy, the most extensive changes since the island adopted communism nearly 70 years ago. The reforms shift the country toward a market‑oriented model and have been met with sharp criticism from the United States, which called them a superficial “smoke‑screen” and warned that Cuba remains a security threat.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez responded on X, stating that the United States “has no political, legal or moral authority to judge the measures we adopt,” and condemned U.S. sanctions as collective punishment of the Cuban people. The tension follows an escalation of U.S. pressure earlier this year, including new sanctions and legal actions against Cuban officials, as well as the U.S.‑backed removal of Venezuela’s president.
