Cuba's Ministry of Justice Ombudsman protects vulnerable populations
The Ombudsman's Office of the Ministry of Justice in Cuba (Minjus), established in 2023, is working to protect and restore the rights of socio-legally vulnerable individuals. The institution provides free services to children, adolescents, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and victims of violence or discrimination.
With 580 defenders stationed across all provinces and the Isla de la Juventud municipality, the office operates through three primary pillars: providing integral support during administrative and judicial procedures (including emotional and psychological aid), offering clear legal advice using tools like ‘easy read’ formats to ensure comprehension, and providing active legal representation in court or administrative proceedings.
Created under the 2019 constitutional framework and the Family Code, the office has handled hundreds of cases with a focus on the best interests of the individual, particularly children. The institution maintains an ongoing process of improvement and international experience exchange.
