Cuenca, Ecuador chronicles emergence of physiatrics as key rehabilitation specialty

The development of physiatrics (rehabilitation medicine) in Cuenca began in the 1950s and accelerated during the 1970s. Early physicians such as Dr. Julio Vega Toral and Dr. Guillermo Serrano Galarza introduced rehabilitation practices, while orthopaedic and traumatology specialists later incorporated physiotherapy into their treatments.

Post‑graduate programs at the Universidad Ecuatoriana and abroad produced a growing number of specialists. The first dedicated rehabilitation services were established at Hospital Vicente Corral Moscoso, the new José Carrasco Arteaga IESS hospital, and the Hospital Militar, supported by medical technologists trained in occupational therapy and speech therapy at the Universidad de Cuenca. These milestones cemented physiatrics as an essential component of both public and private health care in the city.
