Cuenca records warmest September since 1961 amid heat and drought

The province of Cuenca, Spain, recorded its warmest September since 1961. According to provisional data from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the average temperature reached 22.2 degrees Celsius, an anomaly of 3.6 degrees above normal. Maximum temperatures averaged 30.7 degrees, which is five degrees higher than usual and represents the highest September maximum average in the recorded series. The highest temperature was recorded in Motilla del Palancar at 39.9 degrees on September 4.

In addition to the heat, the month was significantly dry, with precipitation reaching only 35% of the usual levels.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) indicates continued instability across Spain. While October may see temporary cold spells due to polar air masses, the overall monthly trend points toward temperatures slightly above average. High sea temperatures in the Mediterranean and Atlantic are expected to contribute moisture and energy to storm systems throughout the season.
