Cuernavaca parents protest teacher shortage at elementary school

Parents of students at the Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla elementary school in Cuernavaca, Morelos, staged a three-hour blockade on Nicolás Bravo Avenue to demand the assignment of a teacher.

Protesters reported that fifth and sixth-grade students have faced a lack of instruction for two consecutive school cycles. Families expressed frustration over unfulfilled promises from educational authorities, noting that previous deadlines for a new teacher to arrive in December, January, and February were not met.

The Institute of Basic Education of the State of Morelos (IEBEM) previously cited budget constraints as a reason for the vacancy and suggested moving the school librarian into the classroom, a proposal rejected by the school's administration. Parents expressed concern that the lack of consistent instruction will cause academic setbacks for students preparing to transition to secondary school.
