Since the fall of communism, the outskirts of Cugir have shifted from modest garden plots used for subsistence to a thriving residential and leisure district. In the 1990s, land formerly limited to private ownership became available for purchase, allowing middle‑class locals to acquire affordable parcels. Significant investment came from the Romanian diaspora, whose remittances funded the construction of larger homes and modern cabins, gradually turning temporary weekend retreats into permanent dwellings. This transformation reflects a broader post‑1990 trend of moving away from dense block housing around the former industrial hub, the Uzina Mecanică Cugir, toward privately owned green spaces on the city’s hills and valleys.
