Cuiabá authorities launch operation against copper theft and illegal scrap yards
The 'Operação Integrada Via do Cobre' was launched in Cuiabá, involving approximately 100 officials from various state and municipal agencies, including the Military and Civil Police, Fire Department, and the Municipal Secretariat of Public Order. The operation aims to combat the theft, robbery, and receiving of copper-containing materials such as cables and wires.
During the crackdown, three scrap metal businesses were inspected, resulting in the closure of two establishments. Three owners were taken to the police station. One individual, operating a scrap yard in the Novo Colorado neighborhood, was arrested for receiving stolen goods, tampering with vehicle identification, and electricity theft. Authorities also discovered an engine with an altered chassis and various vehicle license plates.
In addition to criminal investigations, the Fire Department identified significant safety risks, including improper storage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and inadequate fire fighting equipment. These findings led to environmental violations and arrests for pollution. Officials noted that several businesses were operating without the necessary municipal licenses, environmental permits, or sanitary authorizations.
