Cuiabá begins transition from NPH to glargine insulin

The Cuiabá Municipal Health Secretariat has begun transitioning patients from NPH insulin to glargine insulin within Family Health Units (USFs). This change follows guidelines from the Ministry of Health's Joint Technical Note No. 169/2026.

The transition targets children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM1) aged between 2 and 18 years, as well as individuals aged 70 or older with either Type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). Glargine is a long-acting insulin designed to provide more stable glycemic control throughout the day.

The substitution will be gradual and individualized. Patients must undergo clinical evaluation and receive a valid prescription to determine the appropriate dose based on their specific needs and glycemic monitoring. Health authorities emphasize that patients should not change their insulin type or dosage on their own; instead, they must schedule a medical consultation at their respective USF to ensure a safe transition.
