Cuiabá faces road closures for events and a surge in motorcyclist traffic deaths

The municipal Mobility and Public Safety Secretariat will temporarily close several streets in Cuiabá from Friday 10 to Sunday 12 February. Rua São Cristóvão will be blocked from 17:00 to 04:00 for the 58th Expoagro, Rua Major Gama from 18:30 for a religious procession honoring São Pedro, and a lane‑narrowing on Avenida Miguel Sutil at 05:30 for the Santander Track&Field Run Series. Traffic agents and public‑security teams will be on site to guide drivers and deter illegal parking.

A 2024 epidemiological bulletin released by the city’s Health Department recorded 104 traffic‑related deaths, 69 % of which involved motorcyclists. Victims were 85 % male and 83 % aged 20‑59. The main risk factors were excessive speed (30.8 % of cases), alcohol use, and lack of a valid driver’s licence (about 30 % of fatal‑case drivers). Most fatalities occurred at night (61.5 %) and on weekends, with two‑thirds dying at the scene. The most lethal corridors were Avenida Fernando Corrêa, Avenida Historiador Rubens de Mendonça (CPA), Avenida Miguel Sutil, Avenida Helder Cândia and the urban stretch of BR‑364. The report will guide new enforcement, education and engineering measures to improve traffic safety.
