Cuiabá fines property owner for illegal tree cutting

The City of Cuiabá has fined a property owner in the Quilombo neighborhood for the unauthorized cutting of two oiti trees. The enforcement action was carried out by the Municipal Secretariat for Environment and Urban Development (SMADES) and the Municipal Secretariat for Public Order.

According to Érico César de Arruda e Silva, coordinator of Environmental Inspection and Postures, the owner had previously requested authorization to remove the trees. However, both the initial request and a subsequent request for reconsideration were denied following technical analyses by forestry engineering teams. The inspection concluded the trees were in good health and posed no risk of falling or structural damage.

The fine follows the implementation of Municipal Decree No. 12.079/2026, which introduced stricter technical criteria for tree pruning and suppression in the city. Authorities noted that they continue to receive reports of similar irregularities, including a separate case being addressed in the Bosque da Saúde neighborhood.
