Brazil Labor Ministry reports nearly 2,000 election harassment complaints FAST-MOVING

The Brazilian Labor Public Ministry (MPT) has recorded 1,937 complaints of electoral harassment following the 2026 elections. The reports involve instances where individuals used positions of power to influence, pressure, or coerce workers regarding their voting choices or political affiliations.

Significant cases include a legal action against Rio de Janeiro State Deputy Índia Armelau, who is accused of encouraging employers to dismiss employees based on their political leanings. Additionally, the MPT has addressed incidents where businesses attempted to prevent employees from voting or offered incentives to discourage support for specific candidates.

To combat these practices, the MPT has filed 59 civil public actions, resulting in 52 injunctions to protect workers' rights to free and secret voting. The institution continues to monitor the situation, emphasizing that parliamentary immunity does not cover discriminatory speech and that the end of the election period does not halt investigations into workplace retaliation.
