Cuiabá implements sensory support rooms for autistic voters
The Regional Electoral Court of Mato Grosso (TRE-MT) has launched the ‘Voto Acolhedor’ pilot project in Cuiabá to provide sensory support rooms for voters on the autism spectrum, neurodivergent individuals, breastfeeding mothers, and citizens experiencing anxiety or panic attacks during elections.
These designated spaces are designed to reduce stress caused by noise, queues, and wait times. The rooms will feature climate control, soft lighting, comfortable seating, water, and noise-canceling headphones. To assist with emotional regulation and sensory crises, volunteer health professionals—including doctors, psychologists, and nurses—will be available on-site.
Training for these volunteers emphasizes preserving voter autonomy and preventing public embarrassment. While the rooms serve as support for self-regulation and stress relief, they are not medical clinics; serious medical emergencies will be referred to the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU). Nine polling locations in Cuiabá have already been confirmed for these rooms, including sites such as the Federal University of Mato Grosso (UFMT) and Arena Pantanal.
