Cuiabá judge maintains arrest of BMW driver in fatal crash

A judge in Cuiabá has maintained the preventive detention of Hercílio Junior Freitas Cordeiro, known as the ‘BMW playboy’, following a series of fatal collisions on Avenida Isaac Póvoas. Judge André Barbosa Guanaes Simões ruled that electronic monitoring or house arrest would be insufficient to mitigate the risk to public order given the severity of the circumstances.

According to the Public Ministry's indictment, Cordeiro was driving a BMW at speeds reaching 177 km/h in a 50 km/h zone. The investigation alleges that after striking an initial motorcycle, the driver continued at high speed, causing a second collision that resulted in the death of 23-year-old Paulo Messias Simão Costa and injured another motorcyclist, Guilherme Nunes Medeiros. The prosecution also noted that the defendant failed to provide assistance to the victims before abandoning the vehicle near the Santa Casa de Misericórdia.
