Brazil courts issue major sentences in various homicide and abuse cases
Several high-profile criminal cases in Brazil have reached significant judicial milestones. In Goiânia, a jury convicted two individuals for the 2012 murder of lawyer Davi Sebba. Jonathas Atenevir Jordão received 12 years for qualified homicide, while Edinailton Pereira de Souza was sentenced to 10 years. A third defendant was acquitted.
In Cuiabá, three men were sentenced to a combined total of over 68 years for the 2023 assassination of lawyer Roberto Zampieri. Antônio Gomes da Silva and Etevaldo Luiz Caçadini de Vargas each received approximately 21 years, while Hedilerson Fialho Martins Barbosa was sentenced to 25 years.
Other notable rulings include a 48-year sentence for a man in João Pessoa convicted of killing his ex-wife with over 100 knife wounds, and a 63-year sentence in Santa Catarina for a man convicted of sexual abuse against his minor niece and nephew. Additionally, a jury in Bahia convicted a man for a 2001 homicide involving a dispute over a popsicle, and a driver in Minas Gerais will face trial for a fatal accident involving a two-year-old child.
