Mayor Abilio Brunini of Cuiabá filed an ADI in the Mato Grosso Court of Justice seeking to strike the two‑thirds voting requirement for amendments to the municipal chamber’s internal regulations. He argues the rule violates the Constitution and blocks democratic decision‑making, aiming to replace it with a simple‑majority threshold that would ease passage of a proposal allowing chamber president Paula Calil to run for a consecutive term.

Brunini also warned he could take the city’s Municipal Market to court after the public‑private partnership was re‑opened, and he criticised federal allies for supporting smaller, lower‑quality housing projects while President Lula called for better homes. In parallel, the city council approved a law creating 96 permanent staff positions across technical and senior roles. Councilor Ilde Taques publicly expressed surprise at Calil’s candidacy, highlighting internal tensions over the re‑election debate.
