Cuiabá medical student arrested in fatal drunk driving accident

A 20-year-old medical student, E. H. C., is under investigation following a fatal accident in Cuiabá that killed an elderly pedestrian, Valdemir de Souza. The incident occurred on Avenida Beira-Rio after the student collided with a motorcyclist and subsequently struck the pedestrian.

In his testimony to the Civil Police, the student claimed he was distracted by his vehicle's dashboard after passing a speed bump, causing him to miss the motorcyclist slowing down and the pedestrian crossing the road. Although the student attempted to provide aid and noted the victim still had a pulse, Mr. de Souza died while being transported to the hospital.

Police reports indicate that a breathalyzer test conducted at the scene was positive for alcohol consumption. The student was arrested in flagrante and later released after paying a R$ 25,000 bail. The Specialized Traffic Crimes Police (Deletran) is continuing the investigation.
