Cuiabá holds walk to raise awareness of elderly violence

The municipal government of Cuiabá organized a public walk on Saturday, June 27, at Parque Tia Nair as part of the ‘Junho Violeta’ campaign, which focuses on preventing violence against older people. Participants included seniors, family members and staff from the municipal Secretariat of Social Assistance, Human Rights and Inclusion, as well as members of the Aidê Pereira Elderly Community Center (CCI).

The event featured a collective stretch, a picnic and speeches from officials and community leaders. Secretary Hélida Vilela emphasized the integrated approach, stating, “We act together to inform and raise awareness among the elderly; often the violence is silent, and knowing their rights is the first step to breaking the cycle.” CCI manager Evânia Alves Tito explained the choice of a busy park to draw public attention to respecting elderly rights. Long‑time participant Leny Setubal Teixeira highlighted how the center’s activities improve quality of life and social inclusion.

The walk was coordinated with the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the Civil Police and the Public Defender’s Office, aiming to educate the public about psychological, financial, physical and neglect‑related abuse and to encourage reporting.
