Cuiabá nears Ministry of Education literacy target

Cuiabá is nearing the literacy target set by the Ministry of Education (MEC) following a significant increase in literacy rates, which rose from 47% to 61% between 2025 and 2026. The progress was highlighted during the 2nd Municipal Alfabetiza MT Seminar, an event organized by the City Hall to bring educators together to share successful methodologies and practical classroom solutions.

The Alfabetiza MT program is a collaborative effort between the Cuiabá City Hall and the State Government aimed at qualifying pedagogical practices and ensuring children are literate at the appropriate age. The current 61% rate brings the municipality close to the MEC's established goal of 62% for the period.

During the seminar, educators presented various innovative projects, such as the ‘Tenda Literária’ for early childhood education and investigative teaching methods involving prehistoric themes. Rodrigo Dourado, deputy secretary of Monitoring and Statistics for the SME, emphasized that while infrastructure and nutrition are important, pedagogical work remains the administration's priority.
