Cuiabá UPAs accelerate stroke treatment within therapeutic window

Four Emergency Care Units (UPAs) in Cuiabá operate under a strict SOS AVC protocol to ensure patients with suspected stroke receive rapid assessment and are transferred to the Municipal Hospital of Cuiabá (HMC) within the four‑hour therapeutic window. On Wednesday, a patient arrived at the UPA Norte at 13:58 and was handed over to the hospital by 14:25, completing the whole process in less than 30 minutes.

During the incident a family member became aggressive toward the staff, prompting the panic button and a rapid police response to secure the unit. Deputy Secretary of Secondary Care Odair Mendonça highlighted that every minute matters in stroke emergencies and emphasized the need for both speedy care and a safe environment for health professionals.
