Cuiabá health authorities issue medical waste alert and new health policy updates

The Cuiabá Municipal Health Secretariat has issued an alert regarding the improper disposal of medical sharps, such as syringes, needles, and injectable pens, including those used for weight loss treatments. Discarding these items in regular trash poses contamination risks and physical dangers to urban cleaning workers.

To ensure safety, residents are advised to return materials purchased at pharmacies to the point of sale. Materials provided by the public health system should be returned to one of the city’s 72 Family Health Units (USF). Until disposal, sharps must be kept in rigid, puncture-resistant, lidded containers filled only to two-thirds capacity.

Additionally, the Cuiabá City Hall has formalized its commitment to two national health policies. Through a partnership with the State Secretariat of Justice (SEJUS-MT), the city has joined the National Policy for Integral Health Care of Adolescents in Conflict with the Law (PNAISARI). Furthermore, in collaboration with UNICEF and the Ministry of Health, the city is implementing the Early Childhood Friendly Unit (UAPI) initiative to support priority populations.
