San Bernardo authorities investigate charred body found in burned vehicle
Authorities in San Bernardo, Chile, are investigating the discovery of a charred body found inside the trunk of an abandoned, burned-out vehicle near the banks of the Maipo River.
The vehicle, identified as a Fiat Punto Easy 1.2, was spotted by municipal security patrols on Sunday, October 4, 2026. Preliminary checks by police confirmed the car did not have an active theft report.
Specialized units from the Fiscalía ECOH and the Homicide Brigade of the Policía de Investigaciones (PDI) are leading the inquiry. Due to the intensity of the fire, forensic teams face significant challenges in identifying the victim or determining the cause of death. Investigators are currently reviewing security camera footage and vehicle registration data to establish the identity of the deceased.
