Cullman County Deputy Fires on Suspect During Search Warrant Execution

On July 30, 2026, members of the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team (SRT) executed a search warrant at 960 Alabama Highway 91 in the Bremen community, Alabama. At approximately 7:12 a.m., resident John Johnsey, 54, opened fire on the deputies, who returned fire. Johnsey was wounded with non‑life‑threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

County District Attorney Champ Crocker charged Johnsey with attempted murder, second‑degree theft of property, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, and unlawful possession of a firearm. The suspect is being held pending an Aniah’s Law hearing, and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is investigating the incident. The deputies involved were deemed to have acted within state law, and no officers were injured.
