Cultural and academic milestones in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic has seen significant cultural and academic developments in Santo Domingo. The Asociación Dominicana de Profesores (ADP) inaugurated its new Cultural Classroom, a space intended for reflection, literary creation, and critical thinking for the educational community and society.

During the inauguration, the ADP released the book ‘El infierno en el Paraíso Salvaleonés’ by writer and former union president Celio Guerrero. The historical novel aims to highlight the role of women in the social fabric of Latin America and the Caribbean, focusing on figures that have often been rendered invisible in historical narratives.

In a separate academic milestone, historian María Filomena González Canalda was inducted as a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Dominican Republic. During her induction, she presented research titled ‘Unidades productivas finales del siglo XVIII y durante el período 1822-1844: apuntes para una comparación’. Her study analyzes economic transformations and productive units, such as haciendas and sugar mills, in the areas surrounding Santo Domingo during those historical periods.
