Cultural events announced in Colonia and Mexico

In Colonia, Uruguay, the Centro Cultural Nacional AFE will host the departmental selection for the “Señora de las Cuatro Décadas” and “Miss 50+” pageants on September 18. These competitions, which focus on experience, personality, and empowerment rather than traditional beauty standards, will select representatives for the 2026 national finals in Maldonado and Rocha.

In Mexico, the Secretaría de Cultura and the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL) are organizing a commemorative talk to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Guadalupe Loaeza’s novel, “Las niñas bien.” The event, held at the Capilla Alfonsina, will feature a conversation between Loaeza and art historian Isabel Revuelta Poo regarding the work’s critique of gender, class, and the Mexican bourgeoisie.
